Fighting Forward: Defending Black Breastfeeding Support in a Shifting Policy Landscape

Policy shifts can slow us down, but they won’t stop us.
Policy shifts can slow us down, but they won’t stop us.

The political winds have shifted, and with the new administration, we're already seeing policy changes that threaten the progress we've made in health equity, racial justice, and support for Black breastfeeding families. Cuts to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, attacks on maternal health programs, and rollbacks on federal funding for community-based organizations all have a direct impact on the work we do at San Diego Lactation Equity Alliance (SDLEA) and organizations like ours.

These changes aren’t just bureaucratic—they have real consequences. They mean fewer resources for lactation support, less funding for culturally competent care, and more barriers for Black families trying to access the breastfeeding support they deserve. When policies ignore the specific needs of marginalized communities, health disparities grow wider, and our fight for Black maternal and infant health becomes even more urgent.

How Do We Fight Back?

Despite these challenges, we are not powerless!

Here’s how we push forward:

✅ Stay Engaged and Informed

Keep an eye on policy changes at the local, state, and federal levels. Know what’s happening so we can mobilize and advocate where it matters most.

✅ Strengthen Community Support Networks

When federal funding shrinks, community collaboration becomes even more critical. Support and uplift Black-led organizations, doulas, midwives, and lactation consultants who are on the front lines of maternal and infant health.

✅ Advocate Loudly

Call your elected officials, show up at local & state meetings, and demand that Black maternal and infant health remain a priority. Grassroots advocacy works, and our collective voices can create change.

✅ Invest in Our Own Solutions

We’ve always known that true change starts within our communities. Whether it’s expanding Black-led lactation support networks, launching community milk banks, or training more Black IBCLCs, we will continue building sustainable solutions that center Black families.

Moving Forward, Together

Policy shifts can slow us down, but they won’t stop us. Black families deserve culturally competent lactation support, and SDLEA is committed to continuing this work—no matter who’s in office. Now, more than ever, we need to lean on each other, uplift our mission, and ensure that our communities receive the care and support they need.
